Book Swap
Thanks for celebrating Earth Week with DSF!
This year, the David Suzuki Foundation celebrated Earth Week in a unique and grassroots way. To mark the official launch of our Book Club, we invited people across Canada to take part in Book Swaps at local coffee shops and community spaces.
Book swaps are simple and informal gatherings that promote sustainability, meaningful conversation and the exchange of new ideas. They are also great opportunities to pass along inspiring titles, meet new friends and get some good recommendations for your book list.
We hope to host more book swaps in the future so stay tuned.
Book Swap HighlightsThere were over 90 book swaps during Earth Week 2010! But don't wait for next year - book swaps are easy to organize and serve as great community builders. Host a book swap at work - encourage green workplace behaviour and get to know your colleauges. Many volunteers served as hosts and we thank you for your time and energy. Special thanks to all coffee shop owners and managers for supporting sustainability initiatives in their communities. |
What participants said...
I think that this year was only the beginning of the idea and that this will really begin fly in the future.
- Tanya Dahms, Volunteer (Regina, SK)
I saw the success show itself more in my conversations with people who approached me to ask what I was doing. So although I think the book swap part could have been better, I very much enjoyed talking to fellow community members about sustainability and lots of other interesting topics!
- Erik Blair, Volunteer (North Vancouver, BC)
In fact, the reason I signed up for this volunteer position was because I had just finished reading "The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World" - a book which highlights the importance of social ties, and community."
- Jennifer, Volunteer (Whitby, ON)
I wanted to let you know that the staff book swap was great! A lot of people swapped books, and having the library books as giveaways was an extra bonus, as 2 boxes of books were recycled.

We had a really nice book swap at our home here last Saturday April 24th. Some of our neighbours came by and newly acquainted friends and family too. Everyone found a book or two and it was nice that one of my clients left so happy as she found two books that she had always wanted to buy but never did and now has the books in hand that she picked up at the book swap.
People who attended and those who could not have also asked me when I will be running another DSF Book Swap - this is really promising...It was a lot of FUN!
- Virginia, DSF Supporter (Caledon ON)
I'd say it was a great idea but needed more promotion. We did have some people come out, and the ones who did were very enthusiastic...Being a bookstore, we enjoy some perks as a result of our relationships with publishing companies, we contributed reader's copies books (not yet released to the public). People seemed to really jump on this. Tanya, our volunteer, was fantastic.
